(At the airport, it won't be difficult to find signs and/or people who can give you directions to the train.) It all seems a little overwhelming if you're new to the city, but the New York subway system is actually pretty easy to use. And you're right that a cab would be an expensive way to get from the airport to Union Square. The combined train and subway fare is a little more than $7. A cab would cost several times that much.
